Staying was supposed to be the hard part.
Three days after the invitation, the mountain is still a country with teeth. The hut has a roof of bronze. The wall is only starting to mean something. Mark is doing what a wildlife man does when the last world is the only world left: counting trunks, placing boards in the crowns, writing home instead of viable. Carla is gold hair and a whisper-marriage that will not fit a station form. Ritzz is red eyes and high roads and a tamin who asked instead of took.
Then the sky spends another bird.
Then another.
The fold does not empty. It fills. A soldier walks out of wreckage with tags and a decision. Daughters who were thrown by circles walk around a mountain with bags. A living column starts to look like a family the city would not have written.
Below the rib, a square argues. Hunt. Accept. Scout. Wrong-color is still a tax in some mouths. Unclaimed bones still wait at throats. And in the canopy, someone is learning the unfinished language from a distance, filing kisses and thunder and a man who does not hold a coat against a girl.
The sky still has hands.
The jungle still does not ask.
Command is still listening to a warning it does not know how to obey.
He is not assessing this world anymore.
He is keeping it.
She is not watching from the ceiling anymore.
She is sleeping in the house.
Until the mountain spends a sound that does not belong to bronze or birds…
…and the den has to decide what it will carry, and what it will give back.
