The Pale Court - Book 1.

Tom stacked boxes for a living.

Twenty-six. A badge. A clicking fan. A too-small apartment and the kind of quiet that comes after you throw a cheating woman onto the landing and call it dignity. He was not looking for a throne. He was not looking for a prophecy. He was looking for sleep that did not leave him shaking.

Then the dreams started.

Not blur. Not leftover loneliness stitched to late-night tabs. A hall that belonged to no city he had ever walked. Candles in iron. A red runner like a tongue laid down stone. And her.

Vespera Ashenveil. The Pale Fox of Hollowmere.

Snow-and-ink fur. Hair split like two nights arguing over her at birth. Yellow-gold eyes that already knew how he tasted. Fangs that were not costume. She was not a pet. She was not sorry. She was the rumor that walks into a feast already fed... and she had found his name.

She offered him a contract the waking world insisted could not exist. Mistress. Toy. Weapon. Many women, if he accepted. Himself, always hers. Say it only in the dream, and it stayed a dream. Say it in the room with the fan, and it became a door.

Fox-kin did not exist. Vampires did not exist. Hollowmere was not on any map. Tom knew that. He also knew the smell of wax and cold stone that followed him onto the morning bus.

By day he filled orders in a warehouse that smelled like cardboard and diesel. The other men talked about women the way they talked about trucks. Tom kept his head down and looked, once, through the office glass at Maria... dark ink, a professional voice that was a lie, a throat he had no right to want. He had been decent when it cost him. He did not know decency was the thing a gothic world would test first.

Because the night was not finished with him.

Every time he closed his eyes the hall came back. Promises with teeth. A kingdom of fog and feeding licenses and beast-kin who traded secrets for protection they never quite received. A fox who collected rare things and had decided a warehouse rat might be interesting enough to walk toward.

The Pale Court — Book 1 is a dark erotic gothic fantasy of hunger, consent, and the dangerous difference between a fantasy you keep and a name you say out loud. For readers who want their power explicit, their intimacy earned, and their monsters beautiful enough to make a world worse on purpose.

The runner is waiting.

The stained fox is watching.

And somewhere that is not his apartment, a door has already learned his name.

About me

B. B. Hartwich Bio

B. B. Hartwich is a dedicated family man. Originally from Denmark, he visited Washington State in 2004, where he met his wife, Angela. In 2006 he officially moved to Washington and married her. He became a stepfather to two wonderful girls, and shortly afterward a daughter and a son joined the family.

He worked as a security officer for four years. During that time he wrote his first book in 2008, though it took four years to find an editor he trusted. Kimberly Dunn of Dunn Editing accepted the challenge, and together they turned the manuscript into a finished book.

In August 2022 B. B. Hartwich published the opening volume of a new series, The James Hamill Chronicle. The ambitious five-book saga features installments of more than 500 pages each.

Since then his writing career has expanded dramatically. By 2026 he has published 161 books, along with multiple box sets and more than thirty audiobooks. Among his completed series are the four-book fantasy The Dungeon in the Wall, the two-book Beyond the Blaze, and the two-book The Search for Atlantis, as well as many additional titles across fantasy, science fiction, and other speculative genres.

First and foremost, B. B. Hartwich remains a family man who spends most of his free time with his wife and children. When not at home he works in shipping and receiving, a position he began on March 1, 2022 after six years as a delivery driver. An injury prompted the job change, allowing him to continue providing for his family.

His hobbies include writing, 3D printing, the outdoors, prospecting, metal detecting, coin collecting, and computer gaming whenever time allows.
